An Unexpected Journey

Although this title is often linked to fantasy, it is definitely the case in crime this time, with Lucy Clarke’s The Hike. With many good journey books, it’s often about the relationship between friends and with a rock star, somebody on a trial separation, a mum missing a kid and a memorial journey, all of the characters have their own reasons for being on this hike. But when the prologue opens with a body being found at the bottom of a mountain, how does it link to the story? Like many prologues, there is more to it and this is why I’ve enjoyed this book so much.

With lots of characters, though, it would have done well to have an extra narrator just to give the audiobook more impact, because each chapter was done from the point of view of one of the women on the hike, but the female narrator played all of the parts.

I can’t say much about all of the elements of the plot, but the personal stories of the characters are what moved this book along, with each of the backstories developing to have a drastic impact upon the conclusion.
